Well worth a visit is this unusual destination where the scenery is not only spectacular but very diverse from stunning waterfalls, glaciers, and active geysers to lichen covered lava rock landscapes and beautiful coastal views.

Car hire is good value here and driving very easy, simple and stress free as the roads in the main are very quiet and you can drive for miles without seeing another vehicle. It is probably the best way to see as much as possible and a 4 X 4 is essential if you intend to go off the beaten track. However organised tours and excursions are plentiful if you prefer. Whale watching is a must in the summer months where there is a chance to see minke and humpback whales, harbour porpoises and white beaked dolphins displaying around your boat and a wonderful view of nesting puffins.

In a short 3-4 night stay you can take in most of the most popular sights in the south. Experience a dip in the soothing mineral hot spring water of the Blue Lagoon. The famous Golden Circle tour is a must with the awesome Gullfoss waterfall, geysers and national park. The south drive to the east coast is long but well worth the effort to view en route the thunderous waterfalls and dramatic rock formations with the amazing blue icebergs floating down from the ice cap glaciers to the sea on the east coast at Jokulsarlon.

A visit to the old harbour area of Reykjavik itself is of interest and the best view of the city is from the top of the Hallgrimer church tower.

The price of food and drinks in Iceland compare reasonably favourably to the UK and the holiday costs including flights, hotel, car hire and whale watching are currently good value.
